This unusual MB&F HM3 Black Frog was created in 2010, taking the original HM3 Sidewinder concept and adding bulbous domes that resemble a frog’s eyes. Limited to only 12 pieces, the watch is an excellent addition to any collection focusing on independent watchmaking or for the wearer looking for something different.

Limited to just 12 pieces, this MB&F HM3 Black Frog takes the concept introduced by the HM3 Sidewinder and Starcruiser to its logical extreme, transforming the piece into an amphibious fantasy. MB&F are well-known within the horological world for their experimental designs, and this HM3 Black Frog is no exception.
Although the piece may appear overwhelming at first, it is fairly easy to read, with the hour and minute domes intended to be read together, and a date wheel that links both domes together in a symmetrical fashion.
Characterised by bulbous domes that mimic a frog’s eyes sticking out of water, a unique feature of these domes is that they enlarge the numerals beneath the crystal, allowing the time to be seen from several angles, without the wearer needing to turn their wrist. These sapphire crystals were incredibly challenging to develop, as any imperfections could lead to a distorted view.
There are several differences between this version and the original HM3 Sidewinder, such as the development of a new gear train, as the hour dome of the HM3 Black Frog revolves across 12, rather than 24 hours. The date wheel has also been slightly enlarged compared to the previous Sidewinder edition. Additionally, the rotor of the watch is outlined in green and is shaped like a battle-axe, a nod to MB&F’s signature design. The wearer is also able to catch a glimpse of the movement underneath, just below the rotor.

Condition
This MB&F HM3 Black Frog is in very good condition overall. Light superficial marks are found on the case and lugs, consistent with minimal wear. The engravings and hallmarks on the case back are crisp and well defined.
